The Executive Committee of Bishop Auckland Constituency Labour Party (CLP) has resolved to delete our official presence on X (formerly Twitter).
This decision follows careful consideration of the platform’s current environment and its impact on public discourse. Since the change in ownership, X has increasingly prioritised an unmoderated approach to free speech, resulting in user feeds that often become echo chambers for hate speech, misinformation, and divisive content. The platform’s algorithms have been shown to amplify graphic and disturbing material, while complaints about racist, Islamophobic, and other discriminatory posts have not been adequately addressed.
We recognise the argument—put forward by some, including the BBC—that decent voices are needed on X to counteract negativity and misinformation. However, after thorough discussion, we believe that the risks and harms now outweigh the benefits of continued engagement. Remaining on X would not be consistent with our Labour values of inclusivity, tolerance, and respect for others, which are fundamental to a healthy democracy.
Bishop Auckland CLP will continue to communicate and engage with members and the public through alternative channels, ensuring our commitment to open, respectful, and constructive dialogue remains strong.
