DCC Recruiting Independent Neighbourhood Board Chair – Apply by Feb 10

Durham County Council is urgently recruiting an independent Chair to lead the new Neighbourhood Board for this area. Recruitment has begun and applications are open to people with a strong commitment to the community.

The Chair will work with residents, DCC and the local MP to bring people together together, shape a 10‑year vision, and oversee delivery of agreed projects. Strong local knowledge and a clear understanding of residents’ needs are essential.

Who Pride in place is looking for

A candidate who:

  • is rooted in the community and respected locally
  • can unite different voices and lead fair, open discussions
  • communicates clearly and stays calm under pressure
  • has experience in public, private or community leadership
  • can run an inclusive Board where decisions are clear and followed through
  • can commit time to a fast‑moving programme

Suitable applicants might include charity leaders, campaigners, community organisers, faith leaders, teachers, GPs, or local sports or cultural figures.

Elected representatives (MPs, MSPs, MSs, MLAs, councillors) cannot apply.

Role purpose

The Chair will champion the area, lead a community‑driven Board, and help shape a shared vision for the future. They will represent the Board publicly, support strong community engagement, and help bring people together across political lines. This is a strategic role, not a delivery post.

The role is normally voluntary, but a small payment may be available to support those who need it.

How to apply

Send a CV and cover letter stating the area you wish to represent and why you are interested to CED@durham.gov.uk.

Deadline: 10 February 2026.

Questions can also be sent to the same address.
