What the New Education Missions Mean for Our Area

The government has launched two major education missions to help communities that have been left behind for years. Bishop Auckland is exactly the kind of place these missions are designed to support.

Mission North East

Helping children in the North East get the results they deserve

Bishop Auckland has some of the widest education gaps in the region. Many families face real barriers: low incomes, long travel distances, and fewer local opportunities.

Mission North East will:

  • Bring extra support to schools in places like Shildon, Coundon, Evenwood, Cockfield, West Auckland and Woodhouse Close
  • Help working‑class pupils, who make up a large part of our school communities
  • Improve attendance and raise results
  • Close the gap between pupils from low‑income families and everyone else

This is the first time in years that national policy has directly targeted the challenges faced by our towns and villages.

Mission Coastal

Support for communities with long‑term disadvantage

We may not be coastal, but many of our rural and semi‑rural villages face the same problems:

  • Long journeys to school
  • Fewer specialist services
  • High SEND demand
  • Limited local choices

Mission Coastal brings targeted help to areas with these challenges — and the government has confirmed that similar support will reach rural communities like Teesdale, Evenwood, Butterknowle, Woodland and the Upper Dales.

Why This Matters for Bishop Auckland

These missions tackle the issues we see every day:

  • Not enough Outstanding schools within reach
  • High levels of disadvantage
  • Stretched SEND services
  • Rural isolation
  • Families unable to move near “good” catchments

The new plans mean fairer admissions, more support in mainstream schools, and extra help for the children who need it most.

In Short

These missions are designed for places like Bishop Auckland — to give every child, in every village and town, a fair chance to succeed.

The government has now published the national delivery framework for its education missions. Further detail on local delivery will follow through Department for Education guidance, funding decisions and support for schools.  Watch this space.
