Why national resilience matters for Britain
Imagine if the power went out, the internet stopped working, or supplies couldn’t get into the country. National resilience is about making sure Britain is ready for moments like that—and can keep going without chaos. Over the last few years, things like COVID‑19, cyber‑attacks, energy shocks and international conflict have shown that modern life is more fragile than it looks. Resilience is also about confidence in the future. A resilient Britain can power itself, defend itself, protect its digital systems and support its people—even when the world around it feels unstable. Defence is part of that, but so is everyday life: strong local services, skilled jobs, reliable transport and communities that look out for one another. The idea behind current government thinking is a “whole‑of‑society” approach—meaning resilience isn’t just the job of the military or emergency services, but something everyone plays a part in, from businesses and councils to schools, families and young people themselves.
