Transforming Bishop Auckland: Green Energy and Skills for Every Community

Bishop Auckland and nearby towns are moving toward a greener future. Labour’s green energy plan aims to create 400,000 clean energy jobs by 2030, with billions in investment and a rapid shift to renewables Technical Excellence Colleges in the North East will train tens of thousands in high-demand trades—electricians, plumbers, welders, bricklayers, and digital specialists. Over £100 million in government funding will ensure at least 40,000 workers are ready for the green economy by 2029.

Skills for the Future

Colleges will use a “hub and spoke” model to connect training with employers, helping people build secure, well-paid careers locally. Labour’s plan will expand vocational training, improve access to apprenticeships, reduce unemployment, and support health and care services through targeted training. Bishop Auckland College already offers hands-on training in engineering and digital infrastructure, with renewable energy programs expected to grow.

Expanding Opportunity and Regional Growth

Investment will attract new businesses, boost the economy, and support high streets. Major projects in Teesside, Sunderland, and Durham are creating thousands of jobs in wind power, hydrogen, and grid innovation, with colleges working together to ensure access for all.

A Stark Warning

Progress is at risk. Reform UK including our current Durham council leadership oppose climate action and have cut green funding, threatening jobs and future investment. Opposition like that also discourages private investment further reducing opportunity and depressing the local economy for all.
