April 2026 – Monthly Newsletter

Thank you for signing up to my monthly digital newsletter. It is important to me that you can see the work I am doing on your behalf. While I often share updates on social media, I know that not everybody uses those platforms. This newsletter is another way for us to stay connected. Here are some key points from last months diary…

DEBATE ON LIDOS AND PUBLIC SWIMMING BATHS

I attended a Westminster Hall debate on the importance of public baths and lidos, and the impact they have on our local communities.
In our area we’ve felt that loss directly, with the closure of the public baths at Crook at Stanhope Lido still not reopened since Covid. These weren’t just places to swim, but vital community spaces that supported health, wellbeing, and brought people together. Statistics show the cross-generational positive impact these facilities have and the lasting benefits they bring to communities.
While the government will invest over £250 million annually into facilities in deprived areas, including a vital £10.6 million through Sport England for grassroots swimming, there’s still no denying the scale of the challenge. But I’m committed to working with our community to find a way forward and ensure future generations have access to these important spaces, already meeting with local people and raising this in Parliament to push the conversation forward.

INTERNATIONAL WORKERS’ MEMORIAL DAY

On 28 April, we remembered all those who have lost their lives due to accidents, ill health or disease caused by their work
It was a privilege to pay my respects, observing a minute’s silence in Parliament, and to reflect on the importance of this cause. A safe workplace must be a fundamental right and we must continue to call on governments, regulators and employers to act.
As representative of a proud, rural constituency with mining history, I thought of historic local work disasters like the West Stanley Pit Disaster and Trimdon Grange Explosion, accidents in local pits like Woodhouse Close Colliery, and the impact of this on our community.
All the while, my mind is also with the family of Poornima Nair, a GP from Station View Medical Centre who tragically past from COVID complications. It is clear there is more to do to protect workers who put their lives on the line to serve us.
I am proud that the government has passed landmark legislation in the form of the Employment Rights Act to support and protect our workforce.
